The best US skaters of the year – WFS version
Recently, the “Skating” magazine named Johnny Weir as the best skater of the year (Readers’ Choice Award for Skater of the Year Michelle Kwan Trophy). Honestly speaking, these results have caused genuine surprise to me. Yes, I agree that Johnny is a great skater, and so on. But if look objectively, I think this award should get Meryl Davis and Charlie White or Evan Lysacek.
Actually, in my opinion the best skaters had to be called Meryl and Charlie. They have achieved outstanding results, not only for their country, but also for figure skating as a sport. After all, their performances last season is a real revolution (in the best sense of the word) in the world figure skating. If you look at their rating, you can see that Meryl and Charlie along with Canadians Tessa Virtue and Scott Moir are far ahead of the nearest competitors. Their performances are true masterpieces of figure skating, both in technique and in artistry. And, of course, they have shown outstanding results in all the tournaments in which they participated.
Of course, maybe they don’t quite fit into a mainstream of a modern journalism course, their pictures don’t print every day, they don’t flaunt, they don’t like the grand expensive parties with Hollywood celebrities, they don’t take pictures in an extravagant strange clothes in a photoshoots and don’t want to be always in mind of everyone and every day. So what?
But they are beautiful, modest and nice people, and they dedicate majority of the time for trainings. They were the whole year in the training ice. They gave to ice dancing something new, beautiful and inspiring. Does “glamour” now rules figure skating? I really want to hope that not. Still there are much more valuable qualities.
