Savchenko, Szolkowy have to begin preparation from scratch

One of the favorites in a pair figure skating, Vancouver Olympics bronze medalists, repeated world champions and four-time European Championships winners Aliona Savchenko and Robin Szolkowy forced to resume their preparations for the world championships from scratch.

The fact is that in connection with the termination of the lease the ice rink in Chemnitz, German figure skaters’ training process could be derailed. However, according to German news agency Deutsche Presse Agentur (DPA), Savchenko/Szolkowy still have an opportunity to continue training.

“At this time the ice is still in our possession,” said coach Ingo Steuer.

Original lease term of the ice rink expired on March 26. In order to renew it, city officials are in talks with the leaders of sports federations and National Olympic Committee of Germany.

“So, we will begin preparation for the world championships in Moscow almost from zero. At this point, we seem to be de-energized,” Steuer noted.

The coach also noted that the athletes quite influenced by the situation of uncertainty with the Worlds which was past few weeks.

After the world championships Aliona Savchenko and Robin Szolkowy will take part in a charity sporting event in St. Petersburg which will be dedicated to disaster victims in Japan.

“We immediately agreed to perform in St. Petersburg. We want to support the Japanese people,“ said Steuer.
