Elena Ilinykh: “We want to keep the secrets of our free dance”

Elena Ilinykh and Nikita Katsalapov

Russian ice dancers Elena Ilinykh and Nikita Katsalapov chose not to show their new free dance at the test skating performances of the Russia’s national team, which recently took place in Moscow. In an interview with Russian news agency Allsportinfo, Elena Ilinykh talked about reasons for secrecy and about the progress she and her partner Nikita made since the beginning of their work with Nikolai Morozov.

“In fact, at the test skating we have shown our new free dance, but just with a different kind of music,” smiles Elena Ilinykh. “We do not want to reveal all the secrets because our first official competition will take place just two months later – at the Grand Prix in Japan. Prior to that, we’re not going to compete.

In addition, these performances were at home, in Russia, and we decided to make dance to a beautiful Russian song. In this season we have discovered so many new. It’s very convenient and comfortable to work with Nikolai Morozov and we are very happy. Also, we had some things to change in our technique. This year we want to show our potential, so we created a very complex program.

On our short dance we worked with a world champion Maxim Kozhevnikov and also we took lessons from other professionals. Besides, the big advantage was rendered by lessons of dances which we had on the Broadway. We have tried different styles and have learned a lot of the new. It was not simple to dance there, but it was pleasant to us.

Also, I can notice that we have excellent sparring partners – Italians Anna Cappellini and Luca Lanotte. They have a big progress. We communicate very well with them and hang together. We learn something from them and they learn from us.” said Elena.
