Family traditions in British ice dancing
We all know perfectly the gorgeous British ice dance couple Penny Coomes and Nicholas Buckland but I think not everyone know that Nicholas has a brother who also is engaged in figure skating. Joseph Buckland competes at the junior level with his partner Olivia Smart. Today they performed their short dance at the Junior Grand Prix stage in Austria (they’re 14th after the SD).
Personally, I liked this couple very much. In a character of Joseph’s skating it is possible to see some similar moments which are inherent to his brother Nicholas. One of them is a manner of Joseph to conduct the partner on a course of all dance, from the beginning to the end. This is a very important point in ice dancing. He constantly looks into the partner’s eyes and that speaks about the adjusted interaction on the ice.
Also, this couple, as well as Penny Coomes and Nicholas Buckland, is not afraid to take risks. Their short Latin American dance is very uneasy. There are many complex elements, such as footwork. Nevertheless, Joseph and Olivia weren’t afraid to take this variant of music and choreography. Absolutely the same can be said about his brother Nicholas with his partner Penny. They have very similar points of view and understanding of the modern ice dancing.
It should be noted that Joseph and Olivia are completely original in the manner of their performances. Of course, they still have a lot of points to work with but I’m sure that this couple will also be loved by the audience as Penny and Nick’s. Both teams are very sincere in their dancing emotions and the spectator always feels a genuine sincerity of skaters.
Also, I’m very glad for the British figure skating, which in recent years has received an additional stimulus for the development thanks to new, promising and very interesting skaters.
