Savchenko, Szolkowy win Rostelecom Cup

Aliona Savchenko and Robin Szolkowy

Germany’s Aliona Savchenko and Robin Szolkowy laid down a huge marker to retain their Grand Prix Final pair’s title after taking their second gold medal of this Grand Prix series. The reigning world champions were in lead from the start to finish at the Rostelecom Cup to take gold at canter with an overall score of 208.69 points.

Their strong and confident free skate program Pina, which is choreographed by their coach Ingo Steuer, is full of new, interesting images as well as perfectly executed elements. Today they made just one error during the execution of Savchenko’s double Axel. “Despite a small mistake we skated great today.” Savchenko said.

Russia’s Yuko Kavaguti and Alexander Smirnov, who will join the German pair in the Grand Prix Final which will take place in Quebec City next month, won the silver medal with 197.84 points.

Stefania Berton and Ondrej Hotarek of Italy scored 168.02 points and earned the bronze which is the first Grand Prix pair skating medal in the Italian skating history.
