The authority of a coach is inseparable from all his activities, knowledge of theory and practice of sports, high standards, etc. Valuable relationship between the coach and team must be constructed on mutual respect, trust and friendship. A good coach is always demanding and principled in the first place to himself; self-criticism applies to all his or her work. He has to be an innovator being able to see everything in advanced methods, tactics and creatively apply them in his work.

A selection of a coach is one of the most important issues in creating a friendly and cohesive sports team. In addressing this issue the important role play organizational capabilities of a friendly and cohesive team as well as the organizational skills of a coach. A person, who does not have them, even if it is a great expert in his field, will not be able to become a good coach.

It is particularly important to the coach to be well erudite in matters of individual psychology and sports activities, to have not only theoretical knowledge in this important field of his profession, but being able to delve into the psychology of athletes and to the entire sports team.

The degree of effectiveness of coach’s management depends on the ability to evaluate characteristics of each athlete’s mental state during its interaction with a partner and opponent, on the ability to promptly and properly remove the causes that lead to failure or conflict.

The success of a collective action of sports team depends largely on the style and form of its leadership. A necessary condition for the effectiveness of sports activities and a high cohesion of the team is a democratic type of coaching.

Authoritarian methods of coaching, when questions of strategy choice, team’s tactics, organizational and other issues are solving without taking into account the views of the team, not only decrease the cohesion of a sports team, but also leads to a worse sports results.

The great importance in the work of the coach is restraint in the external manifestation of his/her own emotions. During the competition, the athlete is particularly susceptible to all external influences, and a look of depressed coach can cause very undesirable reactions of an athlete and others team members.

By using all his forms of communication with athletes coach should maintain their self-confidence and a desire to win. This important requirement assumes that coach has the ability to manage his own emotional states in order to provide an adequate psychological impact on a sports team.
