Chinese pairs strike gold and silver, Russian newcomers surprise taking the bronze
Wenjing Sui and Cong Han struck took their third gold at the World Championships. Another Chinese team Xiaoyu Yu and Yang Jin claimed the silver; Russians Vasilisa Davankova and Andrei Deputat took the bronze medals.
Sui / Han skated a very strong performance to “The Soul of Flamenco” which was followed by quadruple twist, quadruple throw Salchow, a double Axel and throw triple flip. They stumbled on the triple toe – double toe combination. The current Four Continents Champions earned 175.69 points overall. “Today we did well, but we didn’t do our best, I was a little nervous. I think Belarus is our lucky place because we were able to win Junior Worlds here for the third time.” said Han at the press conference.
Their team-mates Yu / Jin performed their free skate program to “Requiem for a Dream” and completed a triple twist, double Axel – double Axel sequence, triple toe and throw triple loop, and Salchow. They earned a new season’s best with 112.76 points and scored 167.48 points in total. “Today we are very happy with our performance because we did our very best. But still we hope to do even better next year.” said Jin.
Russians Davankova / Deputat turned in a strong and confident program to “Romeo and Juliet”, performing a triple toe – double toe, triple twist, throw triple loop and throw triple flip. They also received a level four for the death spiral and spins. They earned 153.66 points overall and moved up from fifth to third place. “We are very pleased to have come third in our debut. We skated very well and we hope to move up next year.” Davankova said.
