Savchenko, Szolkowy lead pairs at Worlds

Aliona Savchenko and Robin Szolkowy

The World Figure Skating Championships in Nice was continued today with pairs short programs. Aliona Savchenko and Robin Szolkowy of Germany performed their program very strong, expressive and with a presence of very difficult elements such as throw triple axel earning the first place. But they made some mistakes and couldn’t achieve their new season’s best. German team received 68.63 points.

Chinese veteran duo Qing Pang and Jian Tong, the silver medalists of Vancouver Olympics, executed a classical and strong by its technique performance finishing second with 65.37 points. The main surprise of this day was the third place of the Japanese pair of Narumi Takahashi and Mervin Tran. They earned 65.37 points.

This day is also can be called as non-Russian. All three Russia’s teams, Bazarova/Larionov(4th place), Volosozhar/Trankov (8th place) and Kavaguti/Smirnov (11th place), fell during their performances and this also was a big unexpectedness.
