Elizaveta Tuktamisheva – The Girl Who Brought The Spring
By Vladislav Luchianov
At the beginning of this season many people talked that the ladies single skating changes and that there will be a fresh breeze, which will add a fresh energy to figure skating. I am referring to senior ladies skating. And the wind came, but it came not just for blowing for a few days.
This wind came when it was strong enough to overturn the various forecasts for announced tournaments. This wind brought elements to the seniors skating which were missing there for some time. This wind has forced others to reconsider their views on present ladies skating and their preparations on trainings. Without exaggeration I can say – it is very likely that due to this young breeze in figure skating has come a real, beautiful and strong in its harmony spring. By the way, this spring has a name – Elizaveta Tuktamisheva or just Liza.

It all started in autumn 2011, when Liza has replaced the injured Sarah Meier at the 2011 Japan Cup. Many people do not give much importance to this competitions but Japan Cup can be called as the last trial of strength before the new season. Elizaveta just shocked Japanese audience with her skating and immediately conquered their hearts. She won the tournament, on which arrived a few hours before the start. But there was no fatigue or something like that on the face of this young girl. There was only a strong confidence and desire to skate and perform.
After that began official competitions – Grand Prix series. The first stage for Elizaveta was 2011 Skate Canada. Almost no one consider Liza as a potential winner of this event. I remember a conversation with a colleague from North America, who loves to make predictions of competitions. “Listen, why in your list of potential leaders Tuktamisheva isn’t presented?” I asked.”Well, I don’t know … She’s just so young and don’t have an experience of seniors competitions. But of course, she is very talented,” she said. “Well, I think that all doubters should be ready for a big surprise then.” I answered with a smile.
Liza won this competitions and surprised a lot of people by this fact. In addition, we were able to watch again high quality executed, beautiful and easy performed triple cascades, which have become forgotten in the senior ladies skating. Elizaveta developed her success by brilliant performances in Paris, at 2011 Trophee Eric Bompard. She not only strengthened already strong technique, but she also significantly improved the artistic part of performances. It is not always easy to deal with this part of skating for 15-years girls but Lisa coped with that. The huge role played her summer classes with Stephane Lambiel. No less important were her daily trainings, in which Liza and her coaches worked on components. But the main thing is that Liza really liked the images she presented on the ice.
Of course, this season she had unsuccessful performances too. The important thing is that the unsuccessful performance can also benefit by analyzing the mistakes. Liza has never looked “broken” after the failure. Only some kind of special focus you can catch in her beautiful eyes – she knew what, how and why did wrong. I am confident that the next day at the rink, without special instructions of a coach, she works on every detail of every mistake.
The triumphant end of the season for Lisa became the first Winter Youth Olympic Games, in which she shined again winning the historical event. Whether it’s youth or adult competition – when they are held for the first time, they remain forever not only in the memory of winner but they also take the first lines of the history of any sport.
But Lisa is not only a great athlete. She is also very nice, modest and well-mannered person. People say that such qualities children take from the parents, relatives and very close people. Probably so, because in addition to the family Elizaveta is surrounded by magnificent coaches – Alexei Mishin and Svetlana Veretennikova. I think that some of their qualities passed to her. Despite her high popularity, Liza remains very open and easy to communicate girl. It says a lot. First of all, that this girl has already formed a truly champion’s character.
A fresh breeze which began blowing in the ladies figure skating last autumn, only intensified and I’m sure it will bring many more good surprises for all fans of figure skating. A spring, which it brought, will continue its refreshing, developmental and motivational influence.
