No European champs for Menshov
At today’s meeting of the executive committee of the Russian figure skating federation has decided to support the earlier decision of the national team coaching council.
Thus, at the European Championships in Zagreb will go Maxim Kovtun instead of the national bronze medalist Konstantin Menshov.
Menshov, 29, won the bronze medal at the nationals last month and should by rights have joined gold winner Evgeni Plushenko and Sergei Voronov, who took silver, on the roster for the January 21-27 event in Zagreb.
But the executive committee of the Russian figure skating federation decided to replace Menshov with 17-year-old budding star Maxim Kovtun to expose him to top-level competition ahead of the Sochi Olympics.
Recall that in the late December the Russian national team skaters organized protest actions in the Internet and sent a special petition to the Minister of Sports Vitaly Mutko.
On the initiative of the Minister the executive committee had to meet again. However, it left a previous decision in force. Thus, the sporting principle of a selection to the Russian national skating team was once again destroyed.
