World champions in pair figure skating Tatiana Volosozhar and Maxim Trankov won the Nebelhorn Trophy 2013, setting today two world records: by the overall points in the free program (150.31) and by the sum of two programs – 231.96.

Russians made small mistakes during free skating program but, nevertheless, their score is a record in the pair skating history since the adoption of the new judging system. Previous best achievement (225.71 points) also belongs to them.

“It was not easy to skate today; we made some small mistakes on elements. But a good skate here, in Oberstdorf, became our tradition. We just hope that the whole season will be like last year,” said Maxim Trankov.

“We skate to music from Broadway musical “Jesus Christ Super Star”, telling the story of Magdalena and Jesus Christ, but the story is not about religion, because the story is from musical and (from) the music of seventies. Preparing to the Olympic Games, we clean our routines, work with dancers for our short and also work with actors for our free program.” he noted.

Germans Maylin Wende/Daniel Wende (174.88 points) and Mari Vartmann/Aaron Van Cleave (162.81) impressed the home audience with their strong and beautiful performances and took the second and third places respectively.

For Maylin and Daniel, newly married couple, winning the silver medal on their home ice is something special. It was a nice comeback for them after the season of injuries.

The major disappointment of the pairs’ event became the fact that Narumi Takahashi and Ryuichi Kihara, the main hope of Japanese pair skating, did not get a slot for Sochi. Israel, Great Britain, Estonia and Ukraine got final four spots for the Olympic pair skating competitions.
