Plushenko will carry the Olympic torch in St. Petersburg
2006 Olympic champion Evgeni Plushenko and a forward of FC “Zenit” Alexander Kerzhakov will run with the Olympic torch through the streets of the northern capital of Russia.
The relay kicks off in St. Petersburg on Sunday, October 27.
“There is no doubt that the stage of the Olympic torch relay in St. Petersburg will be special and festive,” said vice governor of St. Petersburg Vasily Kichedzhi to Dialog news edition.
“It is a great honor for our city and at the same time it is a big responsibility. I am sure that everything will be organized at the highest level. Citizens and guests of our city will see a bright and unforgettable celebration.” he added.
In Petersburg stage of the Sochi Olympic Torch Relay will also take part the Olympic champion Elena Berezhnaya, coaches Tamara Moskvina and Alexei Mishin, and other well-known personalities including the Minister of Culture of Russia Vladimir Medinski.
Meanwhile, the president of the Figure Skating Federation of Russia Alexander Gorshkov noted that he pins great hopes on Evgeni Plushenko at the Olympics in Sochi.
“In the men’s figure skating our main hope is, of course, Evgeni Plushenko. He prepares well, purposefully and with qualitative dynamics,” newspaper Trud quotes Gorshkov.
“Last week I watched his training session and was satisfied. But it’s difficult to boost trainings after the spring surgery. The situation is complicated by the fact that at the Olympics we have just one spot in men’s event, so the Russian will face a double competitive load, taking into account the team event.” Gorshkov noted.
