2002 Olympic Champion Alexei Yagudin shared his thoughts and impressions on Olympic performances of Julia Lipnitskaia, who yesterday became the youngest figure skater to win the gold at Winter Olympic Games.

“This is a breakthrough, the same as at the 1998 Nagano Olympics, where 15-year-old American Tara Lipinski won the gold medal.” he said in an interview with Russian media Gazeta.

“If you asked me about the prospects of Julia six months ago, I would answer that I’m not sure that she can withstand with all the acuteness of the Olympic struggle and the technical innovations that appeared in figure skating.”

“But Lipnitskaia proved at the Russian and European Championships that she can skate extremely well. Also, skating judges have begun to evaluate her worthy.” Salt Lake City champion continued.

“Lipnitskaia currently can easily win the Olympic Games.” Yagudin added.

Julia herself, the main protagonist of the latest days in Olympic Sochi, is very pleased with the golden success of Russia in the Team Event.

“I am very happy of course with my performance and that of our team. I tried my best in both the short and the long program. I don’t know how to explain the feeling I had out there. I’m very happy to have helped win the first gold medal for Russia.” Lipnitskaia said at a press conference.

1998 Nagano Olympic Champion Tara Lipinski does not hide her sympathy for Julia.

“I already love her! Julia has a quality that inherent to the strongest skaters – she is very strong mentally! Lipnitskaia is able to cope with nerves. Many people think that when you’re young, it’s easier to compete but it is not so. I literally can’t wait to see her in the individual competitions. She’s also a hard worker.” Lipinski told Russian media.

2010 Vancouver bronze medalist Daisuke Takahashi also was impressed by the Russian skater.

“I would like to note the performance of a young girl Julia Lipnitskaia in the Team Event.  She managed to show all the Russian soul.” Takahashi told R-Sport.

Yesterday the name Julia Lipnitskaia was one of the most cited in the social network Twitter. Many famous people have expressed their admiration for the performance of the young Russian figure skater, including world tennis star Maria Sharapova.
